What is topsoil?

Topsoil gives added protection to plant roots and locks in moisture that has already drained into the soil. Locking in this moisture reduces evaporation and ensures that plants have access to water during dry periods.

Topsoil adds nutrients and also helps extra oxygen to reach plant roots, resulting in better plant health and growth overall. It also helps plants to put down more solid roots and they’ll experience better drainage and less soil erosion.

Better drainage

Topsoil drains very well, so the more you add, the better your drainage will be on lawns or plant beds. For the best drainage possible, mix topsoil into the area where you’re planning to plant, then add another layer of topsoil on the surface.

More nutrients

Topsoil already comes equipped with plenty of nutrients, but it also helps to maintain any extra nutrients that are added to the soil. This could be courtesy of manure or a specialised fertiliser, so don’t be afraid to add a little extra if your plants need the help.
