Beginner’s Guide To Aggregates

P. R. Weldhen

While it may sound like a more technical scientific word, an aggregate is simply a material formed from a mass of fragments that have been loosely compacted together. They have countless applications in modern-day life such as in construction and gardening.

Here at P R Weldhen, we stock a range of aggregates delivered straight to your door. Read on to find out about which aggregates we offer.

Ballast

Ballast is a mix of sand, stone and gravel, that when mixed with cement, increases the strength and forms strong concrete. It can create durable elements such as stepping stones, garden walls and bases for conservatories and sheds. It can take a lot of wear, so is a cost-effective solution because future maintenance will be minimal. If you value strength in your construction, ballast is a much better choice over other concrete mix materials such as sand.

Crushed Concrete

Crushed concrete is a recycled material made up of asphalt debris from other construction projects. It is then reused for projects such as driveways, pathways and garden beds. It is an aggregate that is extremely good for the environment, as concrete is not biodegradable, so reusing it is the best way to reduce landfill crowding and not have to make more concrete.

Topsoil

Topsoil is the uppermost part of the ground where plants grow. The soil is formed over many years by breaking down rocks and engulfing a mix of organic matter that will be on the surface, such as vegetation, dead animals and leaves. This makes topsoil full of nutrients and minerals that will aid in the growth of plants. It’s a high-quality alternative to normal soil that will encourage your plants to flourish and grow.

Topsoil is normally placed in two categories, screened and unscreened. Screened means the topsoil is filtered to an amount that is ideal for a customer, as they may want it finer or more chunky.

Gravel

Gravel is a mix of small, normally varying sized fragments of rock. It is usually produced naturally through erosion and weathering, but can also be produced in gravel pits where various types of rocks are crushed down to the desired size. Gravel can also be mixed with cement to form concrete but is primarily used in mixing with asphalt to form base layers for roads. It is also commonly used for decorative landscaping projects, such as on driveways and walkways.
