Get Started On Your New Vegetable Garden

Always dreamed about repurposing some of your wasted garden space? Whether you just want something to occupy your time, or desire to be more sustainable by growing your own produce, a vegetable garden is a great hobby to have. But for beginners, it can seem quite daunting to figure out exactly how to create the perfect garden that won’t have you crying over half-grown carrots in a few months.

So here are a few tips to get you started on your garden.

Don’t Start Too Big

You might be tempted to convert a giant area of your garden into space to grow vegetables, but as a beginner, you should consider keeping it smaller and expanding as your experience grows. Start with some simple herbs in window boxes, as this will teach you the responsibility of caring for plants without the stress of vegetables dying. When starting your actual garden, remember to space out your seeds. Trying to cram a lot into one space can lead to smaller plants at harvest time. Once you get the hang of it, expand in size and range of produce.

Think About The Season

With winter soon coming, you want to be planting vegetables that are more likely to grow in colder climates. A few examples are broccoli, kale, leeks, parsnips and cabbage. Stay away from beans, cucumbers, and tomatoes which thrive in summer instead.

Location Is Key

The location of your vegetable garden is vital for the health of whatever is growing. They will need a lot of direct sunlight to grow, so pick the place in your garden that gets the most sustained sunlight throughout the day. This will normally be somewhere where the house and any fences won’t cast shadows on the vegetables, which will probably be near the end of your garden and quite central.

Water Levels

Do careful research about how much water your vegetables need to grow, as different ones often require different amounts. Maybe use tags in your soil to differentiate which need more water than others. Newly seeded beds often require frequent watering but more established plants do not. You can end up overwatering them which is not healthy.

Make The Right Soil Choice

The soil that you choose is an important part of ensuring your vegetable garden is healthy and productive. You preferably want something that has a large number of minerals and nutrients to encourage the sustained growth of plants and vegetables.
