SWMP Regulations and Construction Waste

Updated: 2 days ago

Waste management has become a hot-button issue over the last 10-15 years, with the construction industry being of particular concern. It’s no secret that the building sector has a pretty egregious track record when it comes to waste management, with a significant percentage of the UK’s waste output coming from construction companies. With this in mind, it has become increasingly important for construction companies to look into ways of tackling their waste management output. In direct response to the issue, the government decided to bring in compulsory Site Waste Management Plans (SWMPs) in a bid to decrease the industry’s effect on waste accumulation.

What is an SWMP?

In short, a Site Waste Management Plan is a compulsory record of waste volume and disposal for construction companies working on projects costing £300,000 or more. The documentation must identify each type of waste that is expected to be produced during the project, an estimate of the amount of waste that will be created, and how it will all be dealt with.

While it has only been around since 2008, SWMPs have revolutionised the way the construction industry deals with its waste and has become common practice for most companies working in the sector.

The impact of SWMPs

SWMP’s have impacted the industry’s waste management processes in a multitude of ways, with recycling of material and proper disposal being put front and centre of operations. As the legislation was part of the wider Climate Change Act of the same year, the aim of SWMPs to reduce the construction industry’s environmental impact has already made a difference.

By 2016, the sector had reached its 70% target for recovering construction and demolition waste, highlighting how seriously the industry is taking its waste management responsibilities.
