6 Unique Uses For Sand and Gravel

P R Weldhen • Jun 20, 2023

Sand and gravel are versatile aggregates that can be used for a wide variety of things. If you find yourself with a lot leftover, you may be looking for fun ways to use it in your home or garden. If so, here are 6 unique uses for sand and gravel.

Children’s sand pit

Why not give your children a taste of the beach by bringing it to your back garden? Sand is a great way to create an interactive and exciting play area for your kids. Just add a bucket and spade and they’ll have hours of fun! Although, bear in mind, landscaping sand is not the same as play sand, so make sure it is safe, non-toxic, dried and filtered and conforms to safety standards before filling your sand pit.

Outdoor sports and play area

If you have a play area with a slide, swing set or seesaw, you can use sand to soften any falls. Simply pour the sand around the play areas and you can make sure there are no hard falls on grass or concrete. Sand can also be used in sports areas such as astroturf or for athletic events like the long jump.

Paving

Sand can be laid underneath paving to create a sturdy surface for hard landscaping. Maybe you want to add a pathway or a patio to your garden? Using sand is a great way to facilitate a smooth level surface.

Zen garden

Add a little piece of relaxation to your garden with materials like sand, rocks and water. Sand can be moved around to form various shapes and spending time in your zen garden every day is a great way to wind down or prepare for the day ahead.

Drainage

Gravel is a relatively inexpensive material and can be used in many ways. For example as drainage in flower pots or for the perimeter of your garden. Pea gravel is often used around swimming pools and water features because of its drainage features.

Driveways and pathways

Looking for an inexpensive way to create a beautiful driveway? Gravel is an easy way to fill in a driveway or pathway that doesn’t require any construction.
