Preparing Your Lawn for Winter: The Benefits of Topsoil

P R Weldhen • Oct 18, 2023

We are officially in the autumn season, and the air has certainly got a crisp bite to it. With it only going to start getting colder from here on in, now is the perfect time to start preparing your garden for the fast approaching winter months.

One of the ways you can do this includes dressing your lawn with topsoil. To find out more about what this is, why it’s beneficial and what it entails, continue reading as we reveal all you need to know.

What is Topsoil?

Topsoil is a specific type of soil that is purposefully made up of organic matter, minerals and nutrients - all of which are essential for healthy plant growth. This isn’t to be confused with compost, which, although it’s also rich in nutrients, is produced through the decomposition of organic materials, while topsoil is formed overtime through the accumulation of organic matter and materials.

Topsoil is excellent for replenishing the soil in your garden with the vital nutrients it needs to thrive, as well as improving its drainage capabilities. However, alongside being used in planting, it can also be used to cover your lawn in the winter to keep it protected and healthy through till Spring.

The Benefits it Offers

Chances are that your lawn has seen some fair wear and tear over the past year; many of the essential nutrients and minerals it needs will have depleted over time by natural weathering processes. Rather than letting this deplete further over the harsh conditions of winter, applying topsoil protects it from further damage whilst adding nutrients back into your lawn.

By minimising the erosion caused by frost, wind and rain, your garden is kept looking neat and tidy the rest of the year. Furthermore, laying down topsoil can also improve the drainage capabilities of your lawn. In periods of heavy rainfall or snowfall, your lawn can be waterlogged, so using topsoil is a great way to avoid this.

When to Apply to Your Lawn and How

It’s best to apply topsoil to your lawn in the latter half of autumn, since this then gives the topsoil a chance to filter down to the existing top layer of soil underneath the grass, as well as protecting it before the frost arrives.

So, what does the process of laying down topsoil involve? Laying down topsoil can be broken into these five easy steps:

  1. Remove any thatch and moss from your lawn
  2. Make drainage holes
  3. Choose a high quality topsoil
  4. Rake topsoil across your lawn
  5. Add lawn feed
