How The Farming Plough Has Evolved Throughout Time

P R Weldhen • Jul 19, 2023

Astonishingly the plough in some form has been in existence for around 4,000 years! However, it looks very different in the contemporary period from previously. This blog aims to provide you with further knowledge of the plough and its importance in human history.

Ancient Civilisations

Simple scratch tools quickly evolved from the first hand-held instrument more than 4,000 years ago. Typically, oxen were used to pull these ancient ploughs. Farmers could plough the soil more quickly and easily with the help of animals, producing more food for their families.

Instead of inverting dirt, the ancient plough formed an open, shallow furrow by pushing it to either side. The Egyptians made significant improvements to this design. They also developed sophisticated irrigation systems, which allowed them to cultivate a wide variety of crops in arid conditions.

Medieval Ploughs

An important heavy plough used in mediaeval Northern European agriculture was the carruca or caruca. The carruca may have needed a team of eight oxen to turn the hard soil with a massive iron ploughshare. Additionally, the carruca bore a coulter and a moldboard. It gave the English carucate its name.

The portion of the plough that receives the furrow slice from the share is called the mould board. Depending on the type of mould board, the depth of the ploughing, and the soil conditions, it is in charge of raising and twisting the furrow slice, and occasionally breaking it.

The Age of Enlightenment

For a millennium, the standard plough with coulter, ploughshare, and mould board was in use. During the Age of Enlightenment, when design advanced quickly, significant innovations in design were widely disseminated. In 1730, Joseph Foljambe created new forms based on the Rotherham plough covering the mould board with iron.

The coulter, mould board, and handles made up the full Rotherham swing plough, in contrast to the heavy plough. It gained popularity in England because it was far lighter than prior designs. It could have been the first plough made in factories that was widely used and profitable there.

James Small continued to experiment with various mouldboards, curvatures, and patterns in 1763 while using mathematical calculations. The soil was finally ploughed more effectively with less effort, wear, and strain on the horse and ploughman thanks to a universal cast iron form he eventually created. This "Scots Plough," as it was called, evolved into the present-day mouldboard plough over time, which is more similar to the farm machinery we hire.

The 1870s saw the development of the stump-jump plough, an Australian invention intended to break up fresh farmland with expensive-to-remove boulders and tree stumps. A movable weight is used to hold the ploughshare in place.
